It Is Never Over

THERE IS A VICTORY BANQUET for the serpent gods. The whole village is there, and the Norsemen are seated in the place of honor at the very heart of the circle. The women dance for them in the flickering firelight to flutes and drums, and afterward, bowl upon bowl of food is brought out for them. They look disappointed with the food, but pleased with the attention.

“They want meat,” Eagle That Falls says to She of the Sky.

“They will have to kill their own animals. For now, they must make do with whatever we can offer them. We cannot give them more than everything we have.”

Angry Fist sits on her right. He is staring at one of the young gods, the girl who is learning medicine from Tomorrow Moon. Iona.

Their eyes meet and flash in the firelight.

There is trouble brewing here. She wonders how she can stop it.
